I am pleased to announce that Tulane University has awarded funding for a new Ph.D. Program in Sociology, Urban Studies, and Social Work titled City, Culture and Community (CCC) (website: http://tulane.edu/ccc/). The newly formed CCC Ph.D. Program is a broad-based and integrative graduate education-research program that addresses interrelationships between the physical environment, the built environment, and social, economic, and political institutions and processes that shape urban areas. The intellectual focus of the CCC program is unique in bringing together interdisciplinary approaches in the social sciences, social work, architecture, law, humanities and applying them to understand a range of issues pertaining to cities, culture, and communities. The new CCC program reflects Tulane University’s effort and commitment to further interdisciplinary research and education to achieve greater synergy among related disciplines, to focus resources on programs of existing strength, and to put greater emphasis on subjects related to the transformation of urban communities. The CCC’s breadth of interdisciplinary study allow students considerable flexibility to tailor their training to individual research interests while providing a depth of disciplinary skills in sociology, urban studies, or social work.
CCC Ph.D. Program awards degrees in three disciplines:

* Ph.D. in Social Work – City, Culture, and Community (CCC)
Unique Features and Goals:
* CCC program uses a novel and innovative model of graduate education and research that integrates disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary perspectives to prepare students for non-academic career paths in public, private, and non-profit sector human service and social research positions.
* CCC’s coupled disciplinary and interdisciplinary training provides students with the skills to pursue academic positions in a variety of social work and social science departments from sociology to urban studies, environmental studies, urban planning, urban development, and other interdisciplinary fields
* CCC seminars, workshops, colloquia, internships, and teaching and research mentoring enable students to acquire advanced and applied data analytic research skills, GIS training, policy evaluation skills, grant writing skills, and proficiency in qualitative and quantitative methods.

Financial Support
The CCC Ph.D. Program expects students to complete their doctoral studies in five years, a reasonable request given the multiple sources of financial support and professional mentoring CCC faculty provide. Students are expected to be actively involved in data collection, analysis, and other research activities during the summer months as well as the nine-month academic year. First- and second-year funding will consist of a fellowship. Funding for those qualifying students in years 3-5 will take the form of research and teaching assistantships and students will have the option of competing for fellowship funds in their final year of study. Participation in funded research provides additional graduate support as well as offering critical research and training opportunities. The CCC Ph.D. Program will actively encourage and train students to pursue external funding.
